The Best Margarita Recipe

The best margarita recipe is usually the simplest.  No sweet and sour mix required!  Margaritas often get a bad rap but I’m convinced this is because most margaritas these days are made with sweet and sour mix.  Sweet and sour mix makes a sub-par cocktail because it doesn’t contain actual lime juice.
The key to the best margarita is three simple ingredients:  Tequila, Triple Sec, and Lime Juice.  When it comes to tequila I like to stick to middle-shelf stuff.  I would never dream of making a margarita with top-shelf liquor.  Fancy liquor is for sipping, not for mixing!
Triple sec is the next ingredient and even this ingredient will vary in quality.  I stick to nationally known brands.  Triple sec is orange flavored liquor that gives the margarita it’s sweetness.  Some cocktail aficionados will use Cointreau instead of triple sec, but I personally prefer the cheaper stuff.
Lastly, the lime juice.  There really is no substitute for fresh lime juice.  The lime juice cuts through the sweetness of the triple sec and gives the margarita its classic tartness.
This recipe makes one strong cocktail, so watch out!
